RFI recently worked with partner CommuniVations to deploy a hybrid Cel-Fi GO solution for Billabong Zoo.
Billabong Zoo is located just off the M1 Pacific Highway in one of Port Macquarie’s coverage dead zones. With no Telstra and Vodafone reception and very limited Optus network service, it was essential the client had a fast and reliable mobile network connection so all visitors could legally check into the premises with QR code during the covid-19 pandemic. In addition to this, the client’s POS and EFTPOS machines required service to the Telstra network and without coverage, they were unable to operate. NBN was unable to provide a constant signal through the tree canopy and this severely impacted their fixed line services as well as cloud-based services and CCTV.
To establish reliable internet and phone signals across all network operators, partner CommuniVations developed an innovative hybrid solution utilising Cel-Fi by Nextivity’s G31 and G32 smart signal repeaters (see picture 1).

The solution exceeded requirements and boosted the cellular signal of all networks inside the main building of the zoo just in time for the busy school holiday period (for signal results see picture 2). This allowed the client to meet Covid-safe business guidelines and continue operations more efficiently using POS and EFTPOS machines. The data speeds delivered far exceeded NBN services for QOS and reliability. Since the install, the client has received huge amounts of feedback from visitors commenting on how good cellular reception is.
